My family is very satisfied with tivo.
First of all, the 180 hr tivo is enough for a family, but isn't too much. The hours of recording time listed on the description of each tivo box are for the lowest recording quality, so if you would like the best graphics you get about one third of the time it says. You should keep this in mind when purchasing your box. Even the lowest quality is okay, but if you have a big screen you can tell it's a little fuzzy.
Setup was pretty complicated, but I figured out eventually by using their directions. Some cables may have to be purchased to connect the tivo, but I already had them.
The dual tuner is a great feature, so you can watch and record at the same time or record two shows at once.
There are also online features such as online scheduling and "tivo to go", which allows you to watch shows on portable devices. Tivo includes season pass, where it automatically records every episode of a certain show on a certain channel, and you can prioritize which ones you would want to record the most, in case of a conflict.
Tivo takes some getting used to, but it is very user friendly and changes the way you watch TV for good. I don't think I'll ever be going back to normal TV.
